Comic Variant Guide

Comic Variant Guide

Understand the differences between different cover types

In our store you will find comics with different covers - these are called variants . This guide will help you understand why the same comic issue can have several different covers and how this will affect the price.

What are comic book variants?

Comic book variants are the same comic book content with different covers. Publishers create them to offer collectors more choice and increase sales. Each variant has a different rarity and, accordingly, price.

Variant types in our store:

Regular Cover
€5-10

The standard cover that you will see most often. Printed in the largest print runs, it is the most affordable and cheapest.
Incentive cover (1:10, 1:25, 1:50)
€15-80

Special covers that stores receive for large orders. The numbers indicate the ratio - for example, 1:25 means that for 25 regular orders you get one of these variants.
Limited Editions
€25-300

Released in strictly limited quantities (e.g. only 1000 copies worldwide). Often have numberings, holograms or other special details.
Exclusive covers (Store/Convention Exclusive)
€20-500+

Available only in specific stores or events. Our store occasionally receives such exclusives.
Virgin covers
€20-100

Covers without any text - just a work of art by the artist. Popular among collectors for their clean design.

Why are the options priced differently?

The price depends on four main factors:

Circulation - the fewer copies printed, the more expensive the option. Incentive 1:50 will be more expensive than 1:10 because there are much fewer of them.

Artist - works by well-known and popular artists always cost more. For example, options by Todd McFarlane or Alex Ross will be more expensive than those by lesser-known artists.

Characters - Variants of popular characters (Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men) are usually more expensive than lesser-known ones.

First appearance - if a new character appears for the first time in a comic, all variations of that issue will be more expensive.

How to choose an option?

If you are a beginner collector, we recommend starting with the basic covers. This way you will get to know the content of the comics without spending a lot of money.

If you already have experience and want something a little more special, look into incentive options. They are rarer than the basic ones, but still not overly expensive.

Limited editions and exclusives are suitable for serious collectors who are looking for investment items or simply like to have unique items.

Investment value:

While some options may increase in value, don't buy them solely as an investment. The comic book market is volatile, and value depends on many factors. Buy what you enjoy reading and collecting.

Storage and maintenance

We recommend:

  • Store comics upright, not lying down
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Maintain constant temperature and humidity
  • Store more expensive options in cardboard cases
  • Don't flip through a comic unnecessarily - the better the condition, the higher the value
